Magnesium Hydroxide – Aluminum Hydroxide

Antacid

Indications And Clinical Uses: A high potency antacid for the treatment and relief of the symptoms of peptic ulcer and severe hyperacidity related disorders.

Contra-Indications: Alkalosis, hypermagnesemia; where distention may be due to partial or complete intestinal obstruction. Not recommended for severely debilitated patients or those with impaired renal function.

Precautions: Magnesium salts in the presence of renal insufficiency may cause CNS depression. Aluminum hydroxide, in the presence of low phosphorus diets may cause phosphorus deficiency. Aluminum salts tend to cause constipation. Magnesium salts tend to cause loose stools.

Do not administer concomitantly with tetracycline antibiotics or iron preparations.

Dosage: 5 to 10 mL 4 times a day, taken 20 minutes to 1 hour after meals and at bedtime. Higher dose regimens may be employed under the direct supervision of a physician in the treatment of active peptic ulcer disease.

Availability And Storage: Suspension: Each 5 mL of sucrose-free, mint-flavored, suspension contains: aluminum hydroxide dried gel USP 600 mg (equivalent to 459 mg aluminum hydroxide) and magnesium hydroxide 300 mg. Nonmedicinal ingredients: flavor, guar gum, methylparaben, propylparaben, sorbitol and water. Energy: 12.5 kJ (3.0 kcal)/5 mL. Sodium:
Tablets: Each round, flat-faced, beveled, white, mint-flavored, chewable tablet, engraved “Maalox TC” on one side and on the other side, contains: magnesium hydroxide 300 mg and aluminum hydroxide dried gel USP 600 mg (equivalent to 459 mg aluminum hydroxide). Nonmedicinal ingredients: flavors, glycerin, light mineral oil, magnesium stearate, mannitol, sorbitol, sucrose and water. Energy: 12.5 kJ (3.0 kcal). Sodium:
